There is this rumor going around today that the second amendment is outdated. Somehow it is no longer relevant or necessary. Or that by using the word “militia” that this is referring to our military, not all American citizens. First off, the right to protect one’s self pre-dates government, so this never becomes outdated.

Second, the militia portion is a complete misread of history. The second amendment clearly says in its language that it is “the right of the people.” This same language is used in a few other places of the bill of rights, in each place meaning the same thing. That the stated constitutional right is for the people. On top of that, during this period in history the word militia, meant all able-bodied men. In today’s times, that would include women as well.

“A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

That’s the WHOLE thing, guys. The whole 2nd Amendment. Funny right? It’s those 27 words that protect mine and your right to carry a gun. I recently read a survey where they asked a bunch of people about the constitution, and then they asked the group if they had ever read it. Only 28% had, which seems about right if you think about our politics today. The second amendment isn’t found in our constitution, it’s in the Bill Of Rights, but I believe it is just as important to have read, and more importantly for each of us to understand our second amendment. So if you didn’t before, now you have the facts on our 2nd Amendment. Don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t have the right to carry in America.
